Sure, I will play. I have been using Family Tree Maker since version 5...a gift from one of my daughters. My membership in Ancestry.com was created about the same time. "L_Bashlor" is my user name there.

My Brick Wall Ancestor is shared with a lot of genealogists.
24 Oct 1740,(unsubstantiated)-Newman Scarlett was born. He spent all of his traceable life in Tewksbury, Massachusetts. There are several family stories of Newman’s origin none substantiated. Some say he was a foundling wrapped in a scarlet shawl. Some say he was born to an unmarried mother in England where the sirnames Scarlett and Newman are not unusual. Still others say he was the son of a Boston sea captain. One persistent myth is that he was a child, the lone survivor of a shipwreck off the coast of Massachusetts and washed ashore wearing scarlet clothes. He gave his birth place as Essex, England.

#1 - I am a member at Ancestry.com; username anitab2 (I have a second account as anitabbb, long story behind that.) My subscription expires next month on September 10, I believe.

Okay, Theresa, you've done it now - you've motivated me and made me prioritize!! So many things I want to do, but this giveaway has helped me move heritage scrapping up a bunch on my list! :)

#2 My frustrating genealogy "brick wall":
I want to know, who were the parents of my great-grandfather?!!

George Eugene Brown was adopted by a couple in Texas (Joseph & Elizabeth Baker), but they left his last name as 'Brown'. We've wondered if that was true, but last fall my brother had DNA testing done, and we fit into Brown Group 10; a few other people there are dealing with brick walls, as well!

It would be so exciting to actually find out who his parents were!!

#3 My favorite genealogy find:

Two weeks ago I had been looking up family in the 1940 Census (thank you, Theresa, for your work!!), and I decided to do some searches for my great-great grandmother, Mary King. I knew she had married Thomas King (my great-grandmother's father); but that he had died, and she had married his cousin.

I had a sudden thought to search for her in California, since my great-grandparents had moved from Pennsylvania to California in 1904; and I looked under Mary Gallagher, just in case the cousin had the same last name as her 1st husband. (Please don't ask me why I never did this before!!)

Bingo - there she was, in Belvedere, Los Angeles Co., in the 1910 census, on the page just after my great-grandparents! I also quickly found her in the 1910 census.

I learned so much!! A few things I learned, as I kept looking at the census records:
• her birth year
• her year of immigration - 1861 (I already knew she came from Ireland, but didn't know when or how old she was)
• her year of naturalization - 1865
• that she was a widow 2x, and how long she was married to the 2nd husband
• that she owned her home free in 1910, but with a mortgage in 1920
• that she had 6 live births, but only 2 children still living

But - the most exciting discovery is that she was living with a daughter (I believe she was my great-grandmother's step-sister), and a grandson - this gave me names for several photos that were not labeled! I always believed that the woman and boy were related to her in that way, but had no proof and no names!!

This discovery made me get in and dig a bunch more - found a death certificate for Thomas, wedding records for my great-grandparents, and much more!! I'm also part way through combing the city directories from Pittsburgh, PA, to learn about family members...

I think this is a favorite find, partly because it's a recent find; but it is huge!!

This is my #2 entry. One of my brick walls is Jacob Garber/Gerber/etc. He was born about 1800 in Pennsylvania, probably Berks County. He married Ann Campbell in 1825 and had five known daughters and one known son. One of the daughters was my 2x great-grandmother Harriet Garver Sassaman.
I posted more information on Jacob on my genealogy website: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~jmdt1129/walls/garberjacob.html

Here's entry #3. My favorite genealogy find (right now) is finding the maiden name and parents of my 3rd great grandmother Mary (nee Swavely) Dilliplane. She died before 1850 but I had her first name from the death record of one of her sons. I used the basic FANS (friends, acquaintances and neighbors) approach and developed the theory that she was the daughter of Adam and Ester Swavely. The theory was corroborated by her father's 1842 estate papers - which also named her 12 surviving children since she pre-deceased him! You can bet I was doing the genealogy happy dance!!

I am not a current member - I have just taken a genealogy class to learn about what I have to do to start my family tree - I've found that ancestry.com has most of the info I want though! I'm unemployed right now, but hopefully once I get a job I can afford the fee to access their info! (But will I have time? The catch 22 :P)

The "brick" I have had? How does someone born in the 1800's only show up on the census in 1940?? It astounds me that they never moved, yet I can't seem to find them on previous census records! I've tried alternate spellings, alternate family names...I'm at a loss!

My favorite find is the old newspapers telling of my great grandparents' wedding anniversaries - there's even pictures! (Thanks to Google, they were transcribed!)
